By Dave Hodge:
It's that time again, with the draft quickly approaching, TSN has done its research, and we're ready to unleash the season 2 mock draft, covering the first 2 rounds of the draft. Sit back and enjoy it!
1. Atlanta Flames: W David Roenick
The Flames had the SHL's leading goal scorer in season 1 and due to his retirement, they have a sudden hole to fill. Nobody fits the bill better than David Roenick, he's the best overall talent in the draft and you just don't pass up on a guy like this. Sure he has big shoes to fill, but if anyone out there can do it, it's David Roenick.
2. Hamilton Beavers: G Ty Summers
The Beavers weren't happy with the way that Tony Soprano played in season 1 and they're looking to move on in between the pipes. With no big holes to fill outside of the crease, look for the Beavers to take the top goalie with the second overall pick, Ty Summers. This kid has the potential to be the number one goalie for years to come, and he certainly has the right attitude.
3. Boston Blaze: C Alexei Koivu
The Blaze will be all about forwards. Reggie Williams is an offensive kind of guy, so there will be no surprise when Koivu's name is called at #3. Koivu has drawn a lot of comparisons to Alex Watson, he will be able to solidify the centre of the ice for the Blaze for years to come.
4. Finland Dragons: D Allen Miller
Sylvester Rock made it clear that he's looking to build from the back to the front, there's no better fit than Allen Miller. He's the top defenseman in the draft and will look to become a stud for the Dragons on the blueline.
5. Baltimore Bandits: D Vladamir Miroslav
The Bandits were the top defensive team in the league last year giving up less shots than anyone by quite a margin, they lost Thrillman and will look to replace him instantly, Miroslav will make a great fit in the Bandits organization and will compliment nicely with Tim Santos.
6. Baltimore Bandits: C Jeff Notareschi
The Bandits lost their top player in the offseason up the middle, Scott Newman. Notareschi is very similar to Newman in many ways and will fit right into the starting lineup nicely.
7. Finland Dragons: D Waldo Cezar
Despite taking a defenseman in the first, the Dragons will be surprised to see Cezar fall this far and won't hesitate to pick him up, the Dragons will have their blueline solidified early in this one.
8. Boston Blaze: W Zach Crosby
Another speed winger similar to Reggie Williams himself. The Blaze will look to make themselves one of the most potent offenses in the entire SHL in season 2, look out for this speed line of Williams, Koivu, and Crosby who could very well turn out to be the gem of this draft.
9: Toronto Stars: G Travis James
Losing Matta and Williams at the same time hurts, but Travis James will help compensate. James has drawn a lot of similarities to Szatkowski, maybe the Stars have finally found their franchise goaltender?
That concludes our first round mock draft, feel free to comment on what you think, or if you have any arguments against it. We love hearing your opinion here at TSN. Don't forget to tune in for the draft at 9:00pm ET on Tuesday Mat 29th to catch the live SHL Season 2 Entry Draft, live from Toronto.
