The rules for realeasing a player are as follows; If you release the player in the offseason then you have to pay 25% for each of the remaining years on his contract. However, if you release him in the middle of the season, you have to pay 50% of his contract for the current season, then 25% for each remaining season on his contract. IF the player released signs with a new team then the money is off the books and you don't have to pay anything.
